The Sierra Leone government is committed to building a new airport on the South side of the harbor and has requested that we choose a site for the new airport in the Hasting to Songo area where there is ample space available. The prime location is suggested to be in Waterloo but the final location will be chosen after appropriate soil analyses are performed.
As part of the new airport construction, the highway between Freetown and the airport will be expanded putting the airport ten to thirty minutes from downtown Freetown, depending on the location of the selected site.

The new airport facility, shall comprise a contemporary state-of-the-art passenger terminal building, control tower, runway with a provision for secondary runways, taxiways, apron and hangar together with all the necessary infrastructure and ancillary facilities. It would cater to the requirements of latest generation of modern passenger aircraft. The new airport will have a modular design projected to handle four million passengers per annum. Being a new airport, facilities are projected for commercial purposes such as duty-free shops, hotel and convention centre, air malls, business centre, food courts, as well as leisure and recreational facilities. As it will be the diplomatic and business gateway to Sierra Leone through the Capital City of Freetown, the new airport is envisaged to be a modern landmark structure symbolically representing twenty-first century Sierra Leone.
